Bike Guide
We recommend a hardtail (front suspension only) bike intended for cross-country or trail use with. No ebikes or motorized bikes for student riders.
- Disc brakes
- 27.5" or 29" wheels (26" is OK)
- Reliable components, e.g. SRAM or Shimano
- 100mm to 130mm of suspension travel
- Flat or clip-in (aka clipless) pedals
- No more than 30lbs weight
Recreational, hybrid, downhill, and free-ride bikes are not suitable for riding with our team. Please don’t buy a bike at a department store! They are heavy and do not stand up to cross-country riding.
Why the Weight of Bike Matters
Weight matters far more to a rider than to an adult. A 70 lb student riding a 35 lb bike, which is typical for an adult-style hybrid or mountain bike, is hauling a bike that’s half their own body weight. To get the same feeling, a 200 lb adult would have to ride a 100 lb bike!
